Kundapur is coastal town in Udupi district on NH-17 and is 36-KM away from Udupi,the district head quarter. Kundapur TMC consists of Kundapur kasaba and voderhobali village with an area of  11.84 Sq.Km with 23- council wards. The main occupation of Kundapur people is Fishing and is secondary source of income is from  coconut cultivation. This town is surrounded by  famous pilgrims like  Kollur Mookambike, Hattiangadi, Anegudde, Kumbashi etc., in the taluk.

Kundapur
Kundapur is the headquarters town of the taluk is about 36 kms from Udupi. This name can be traced to the Kundeshvara temple built by Kundavarma in the vicinity of the Panchagangavalli river. Kundapur is also described as the "town of the sun". It has another old temple, that of Mahalingeshwara. It was the principal port of the Rajas of Byndoor who came to prominence after the decline of the Vijaya Nagara power. The Portuguese settled here in the 16th century and built a fort. A well-built redoubt constructed by Haidar Ali commands the entrance to the river. After the fall of Tipu Sultan in 1799, the town was taken over by the British. There was once a tank of fresh water near the town in which was bred a special type of fish said to have been exclusively reserved for Tipu Sultan. The taluk of Kundapur is well blessed with more rivers than any other taluk of South Kanara. It has also a 45 kilometre long sea coast on the western side extending up to its northern boundary. The bridge at Gangolli is the longest in the district. The Kundapur taluk has played a significant role in evolving the Yakshagana dance-drama of the northern school known as badagutittu. Kundapur is the only taluk of the district where bisons are found in its forests. They are very powerful animals and move in herds of ten or so. Leopards sometimes prove destructive to livestock and wild boars to agriculture mainly in the forest areas.  Folk, Arts And Dance:

YAKSHAGANA
The Yakshagana Kendra is a national centre for Yakshagana Dance Drama in the country started in 1971 with the financial support of Central Sangeeth Natak Academy, New Delhi, the Dept. of Kannada and Culture, Govt. of Karnataka, Bangalore.  The Academy of General Education, Manipal and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College Trust who are ever willing to venture into newer and greener pastures sponsoring and nourishing the project ever since its inception.  The Kendra housed in a beautiful place inside the campus is devoted mainly to imparting training to youngsters in Yakshagana dance, music, percussion instruments in Badagu Thittu style.  The Kendra maintains a performing troupe called Yaksha Ranga which has visited foreign countries as cultural ambassador many a time.

City Budget: The annual budget of the TMC for the year 2008-09 is Rs. 906.50 lakhs . Out of which 135.50 lakhs is proposed for capital expenses, Rs. 540.00 lakhs  towards Repairs,  Maintenance, and other work  expenses.
